Transurethral Resection and Open Prostatectomy in Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: Comparative Study

Abstract
The result of TURP and open prostatectomy in treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia were compared in 61 cases of TURP and 20 cases of open prostatectomy between June 1985 and April 1989.
The result were as follows;
1. Mean age in open prostatectomy was 68 years old and that of TURP was 70. 9 years old.
2. Mean operation time was shorter in TURP than in open prostatectomy(126min. in open porstatectomy, 81.5min. in TURP).
3. Mean weights of the resected tissue were 49.7gm in open prostatectomy and 10.9gm in TURP.
4. Mean amounts of the transfused blood were 832ml in open prostatectomy and 209.8ml in TURP. Especially, no blood transfusion was required in 70% of TURP.
5. Postoperative bacteriurias were present in 85% of open prostatectomy and in 33.8% of TURP.
6. Mean duration of the postoperative catheter indwelling was shorter in TURP than in open prostatectomy(13 days in open prostatectomy, 6.4 days in TURP).
7. Mean hospital stay were 18.4 days in open prostatectomy and 8.8 days in TURP.
8. Total complication rate were 55% in open =prostatectomy and 31.1% in TURP and the most predominant complication was urinary incontinence in open prostatectomy and in TURP.
9. Postoperative mean serum sodium value was lower about 2mEq in TURP than preoperative value but so called TURP syndrome (syndrome caused by hyponatremia) was not present clinically.
